1926 Don Messick was born in Buffalo, New York. A prolific voice actor, he lent his talents to a number of Hanna-Barbera characters including Scooby-Doo, Bamm-Bamm Rubble, Boo Boo Bear, and Papa Smurf. He died in 1997 at the age of 71.

1937 Actor John Phillip Law was born in Hollywood, California. In 1968, he appeared in live-action movies based on comics: Barbarella and Danger: Diabolik. He died in 2008 at the age of 70.

1945 Republic Pictures released Phantom of the Plains starring Bill Elliott and Robert Blake. It was the studio’s tenth film featuring the comic strip cowboy Red Ryder, created by  Stephen Slesinger and Fred Harman.

1954 Cartoonist Bud Fisher died in New York City at the age of 69. His highly successful creation Mutt and Jeff, considered to be the first daily comic strip in the United States, ran for an amazing 75 years from 1907 to 1982. Between 1911 and 1913, Nestor Studios produced roughy five dozens silent live-action shorts based on the popular strip.

1967 Toby Jones was born in Hammersmith, London, England. He has appeared in St. Trinian’s (2007), St. Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold (2009), and as the Nazi sceintist Armin Zola in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).

1974 The first episode of the television series Shazam! aired on CBS. Produced by Filmation and based on the DC Comics character Captain Marvel, the show starred Michael Gray as Billy Batson and Jackson Bostwick (and later John Davey) as Captain Marvel. On September 18, Warner Bros. will release all 28 episodes on DVD.

1978 Devon Sawa was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He portrayed Casper the Friendly Ghost in human form in director Brad Silberling’s 1995 outing Casper.
