An Opening That Soars

Art of the Title gets the lowdown on how sibling advertising duo Robert and Richard Greenberg of R/GA landed their first big Hollywood gig: creating the title sequence for director Richard Donner’s 1978 classic Superman. Robert Greenberg recalls that the project was far from smooth sailing:

“The whole thing became a nightmare optical shoot that took something like 14 to 16 hours. Every time we’d do it, there’d be something screwed up, and it got down to the wire. Stuart Baird, who was the editor, was there and we only had one more shot at it. [Visual effects artist] Harvey [Plastrik] stayed up all night, we all did, and it came out the next morning with a hitch in it, but nobody saw it. We covered it over with a music cue!”
