1918: Irwin Hasen was born in New York City. On September 25, 1955, he and fellow cartoonist Gus Edson launched the daily comic strip Dondi about a young war orphan adopted by an American soldier. It ran until June 8, 1986. In 1961, the strip was adapted into a movie of the same name starring David Kory in the lead role and featuring David Janssen and Patti Page.

1944: Jeffrey Tambor was born in San Francisco, Calif. A familiar character actor, he has been in How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) as well as Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008).

1951: Angelica Huston was born in Santa Monica, Calif. An Academy Award-nominated actress and daughter of famed director John Huston, she starred as Morticia Addams in The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993).

1958: Kevin Bacon was born in Philadelphia, Penn. He portrayed the evil mutant Sebastian Shaw in X-Men: The First Class (2011).

1958: Billy Crudup was born in Manhasset, New York. He played the superpowered Dr. Manhattan (alias Jon Osterman) in director Zack Snyder’s Watchmen (2011).

2012: Academy Award-winning actor Ernest Borgnine died in Los Angeles at the age of 95. His prolific career includes appearances in From Here to Eternity, Marty, Ice Station Zebra, The Wild Bunch, The Poseidon Adventure, and Escape From New York. One of his final roles was that of Henry, the CIA records keeper, in the 2010 action-comedy RED based on the comic book series by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner.
