Happy Birthday, Blondie!
Chic Young’s ongoing comic strip Blondie debuted on this date 82 years ago in 1930. The comedic ups and downs of Blondie and Dagwood Bumstead’s daily life eventually found their way into 28 live-action films from Columbia Pictures beginning in 1938 and continuing through 1950. Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake portrayed the cozy couple throughout the entire run of the series as well as on a long-running radio show. The strip later spawned a short-lived television sitcom in 1957 and another is 1968. (Those interested in learning more about how the comic was adapted by various media should check out Carol Lynn Scherling’s insightful book Blondie Goes to Hollywood (2010).) In 2000, the Library of Congress showcased a selection of Young’s work for an exhibition entitled Blondie Gets Married.
